Cleaning the Clutter July 17, 2007 Recently I’ve begun to clear the clutter out of my room. When you plan to begin to tidy up your home keep the following in mind. You don’t need to overwhelm yourself by taking on the whole house at the same time. Instead, pick a small area in which you will work such as a closet and empty that space out onto the floor nearby. Decide about where you want things to be positioned. Look for ways to fit a large amount of your possessions into one small area. For example, I have a large amount of paperwork in my room, including things I’ve written, and schoolwork I’ve saved. Instead of just laying all this in a pile in my closet I placed all the papers into a storage crate. The crate is packed full so I don’t waste any space and if I need to move it somewhere it can be moved easily. Look through your possessions and decide what is worth saving. Things that haven’t been touched in a while may be considered for the trashcan. However, in my own efforts I’ve discovered that my problem is not having too much stuff but not storing it efficiently. Though you may choose to trash old possessions, if you are not sure that you want to part with them you can look for ways to store them more efficiently. Objects of similar sizes should be stacked together so the space they inhabit is fully used. As for all the trinkets you own, don’t overcrowd them in one space. They are for decoration and if you want to store them then put them somewhere out of site. A dresser covered with these knick-knacks simply is not pleasing to the eye, it looks sloppy. Condense your belongings to smaller areas without throwing them together into a mess. If you have storage containers of some kind that are not completely full, try to move your belongings to completely fill a container and then keep the empty storage containers somewhere else for possibly future use. If you simply take the time to decide what you need and what can go into the trash, as you organize your belongings with like belongings and keep a keen eye out for efficiency then your house or bedroom will be looking great in less time than you imagined. Just think about what you want, a clean room, and decide how you will go about doing so. Then act to bring your desire into a reality. Joshua Schwarz |
