Always a Choice February 1, 2007 Every day, whether we are aware of it or not, we are making a great many choices. Some of these choices are very subtle and may be made unconsciously, without our awareness. Every time you are faced with a big decision, it is common to take extra time to consider the possibilities, especially if this decision will affect you to a large extent. However, too often the most important choices are made without a single thought. These choices include choosing between right and wrong, deciding to become angry with other people for bad things they have done to you, and deciding to obey your ego. Your ego is the little selfish voice inside that tells you that you need to be the center of attention, and that you must get pay back from all the people that have done you wrong. Your ego is not your true self. In fact, it is everything that is not you. Your job in life is to leave behind everything that betrays who you are. Whenever you are faced with a bad situation, you have the choice to decide how much it will bother you, or even if it will bother you at all. Good exists in every situation and it is waiting to be discovered. Seek the truth, all that is you. Your ego keeps you trapped because it tells you that nothing can change, you are stuck, to never be worth anything. It tells you that you must make people pay for their wrongs. However, that is a lie because two wrongs don't make a right. Very soon the world will repay you for your struggles, so there is no need to carry the burden of the tax collector, looking to collect your dues. What is the one thing that is holding you back? Find the addiction, bad habit, or false belief that you hold and let it go. If a thought brings you unhappiness then stop entertaining it. For example, you are given the task of giving a presentation to your fellow colleagues and you have spent days preparing it. As the big day approaches you begin to fear that you will slip up and make a huge fool of yourself. You know that you are sufficiently prepared but you think of what will happen if you should fail. The cause of this fear is that you are unsure of what the future holds and are afraid of it. You don't know exactly how it will turn out so you worry, because that will fix the problem, right? Wrong! Fear comes upon us unconsciously if we do nothing to fight it. Remember that nothing can cause you to be stuck in the current situation because the past is only what once was, not what is now! Maybe you will fail, but most likely you won't. Yet, even when your ship strikes an iceberg, fear not! Your boat will not go under. Next time you are faced with the choice to be happy or not, choose happiness. Realize that it is okay to take chances, because if you do fail you are definitely not stuck forever. Good things will always be right around the corner, but you have to look first. Joshua Schwarz |
