Breaking Bad Habits
January 16, 2007

Before you can begin to bring life to your dreams you must do some major spring cleaning in the area of your habits, including both mental thoughts and physical actions. Humans are creatures of habit. We find security in our everyday tasks and enjoy boxing ourselves into our comfort zone. Unfortunately, bringing your dreams and goals to the present requires many bold new habits and, more than likely, you would not normally do these things during your everyday chores. You need to commit yourself to excellence so that every time you recognize a bad habit you may work at breaking it. This is not the same as perfection but instead is a measure of effort and not results. Every time you choose or are required to do something you need to completely give yourself to that task. Right at this moment you may not have your dream job but that does not mean that in the meantime you should not fully immerse yourself in your current occupation. Though you may not be an expert at whatever it is you are doing you can still try your absolute best. Find a way to ignite a passion in your current work and everyday activities even if you would rather be doing something else. Too often people fall into the trap of accepting mediocrity. You are not mediocre and you should not act like you are.

Why should someone give so much effort to a task if it is not interesting to him or her and if it shows no reward for a job well done? Simply because you will not be trusted with more than you can handle. If you can not even live your life fully as it is then why should you get anything better? Have you ever noticed that it seems that the more someone has the more they get? You need to take all your talents and develop them into maturity. Try something that is new, different, or unique. Pick up a new instrument, learn a new skill, read a good book, and above all: excel at your life! Until you prosper with what you have you will have no more. Work to eliminate anything in your life that is not contributing to yourself and the world for the better. Breaking the habit of mediocrity allows you to reach for greatness.

You need to take some steps to successfully break your old habits. Consider replacing it with something else being sure that the replacement is not equally as bad, or give yourself a reason why you should not do it or an obstacle that will prevent you from doing it. Also, realize that keeping that habit will prevent you from reaching your full potential. Though you may fail at first, keep trying to break that old habit. Before long you will be reaching for your dreams.
