Empowering Beliefs January 15, 2007 What do you believe in? Though it should be a simple question, most people must think about it before an accurate answer can be given. Your beliefs affect all aspects of your life so it is important that you are aware of what those beliefs are. Most individuals decide to pick a religion, devote a small amount of time to it each week (going to mass), and then go about their life as if it does not exist. This approach has two major flaws. First, if you accept your religion in stone then you have no reason to pursue spirituality any further. Secondly, religion has the power to drastically shape your life for the better, and that cannot happen if you only tap into it occasionally. Your beliefs are meant to shine in your everyday life so you are living the best life you can at this very moment. This does not mean that you have to become a monk, but rather, begin to live in a state that is aware of your beliefs so that through them you may fully enjoy your life right at this moment. You are in full control of what you believe in. All beliefs are truths that you accept unconditionally, without doubt. For instance, if you decide that exercising is silly or a waste of time, then it will play no role in your life and you will never gain anything from its benefits. However, you will also not have to experience any strenuous activity that may temporarily tire you out. Each belief works in the same way, with its own advantages and disadvantages. Yet, most beliefs only help or harm you. So the logical thing to do is not accept any thoughts or beliefs that do not help you live at your full potential. An example of a harmful thinking pattern is the continual dwelling on past mistakes. This thought only brings you grief because you cannot change the past, so let it go. Your job is to look at everything that is in the world and only think the best thoughts, and follow the most empowering beliefs. Thoughts like: I can do this, I am worthy of great things, and I trust things will turn out well in the end all help you live a happy life. This does not mean that you should sit back and take no action to improve your life but instead back your faith in a higher power (depending on your beliefs - God, the universe, unworldly light, etc.) by your actions that are guided toward achieving your goal. Your beliefs are really only how you live your life. If you step up to the plate believing you will hit a fly ball then you will. Otherwise, doubt will cause you to fail. It is not fair to people that truly believe they will succeed but fail anyway to say that having confidence in yourself guarantees success. There will be times that you try to do something but fail anyway. However, if you have confidence then you will find a new opportunity out of your current situation and you can change things for the better. Every time you entertain a thought you are telling yourself that it is true. These beliefs will appear in your life, you will see them, and then believe them to be true once again. If you continue to see everything at face value then nothing will ever change. Find the good in every dark situation and let it shine. You may be surprised to learn that there is an abundance of good things waiting for you, once you take the time to see them and believe in them. Joshua Schwarz |
